Seragon Biosciences has unveiled Enlivien, a cutting-edge longevity supplement designed to counteract the harmful effects of sleep deprivation by targeting reactive molecules in the gut.

Rising Concerns Around Sleep Loss and Health

In the U.S., approximately one-third of adults face persistent sleep challenges, from trouble falling asleep to poor sleep quality. Research by Dr. Dragana Rogulja at Harvard Medical School shows that insufficient sleep can cause a buildup of reactive oxygen species (ROS) in the gut—a key factor in accelerated aging and the development of age-related conditions, including cardiovascular, neurodegenerative, and immune disorders. However, experimental evidence in flies and mice indicates that preventing ROS accumulation can reverse some of these impacts.

How Enlivien Works: Focused on Gut Health and Cellular Energy

Enlivien leverages licensed technologies from Harvard University, the Mayo Clinic, and Scripps Research to neutralize ROS in the gut—an innovative approach aligned with Dr. Rogulja’s findings.

ROS disrupt mitochondrial function—cells’ energy producers—compromising ATP generation and metabolism, and accelerating aging. Enlivien aims to counteract these mitochondrial deficits while also supporting broader cellular energy restoration.

Dr. Rogulja notes:

“Sub-threshold levels of sleep trigger cellular damage in the intestinal tract and the nervous system… We have developed interventions that can help mitigate these damages, as we showed in animal models.”

The Promise—and the Caveat

While Enlivien is grounded in compelling preclinical research, most of the supportive evidence comes from animal studies. Whether these ROS-neutralizing and mitochondrial-supporting strategies will yield tangible cognitive or longevity benefits in humans remains to be seen.
